Goleta Real Estate

Goleta Valley is Santa Barbara's practical counterpart. It was established in 1875 with the arrival of its first post office but didn't find a spot on the map until the 1950s, when the University of California, aerospace companies turned it into a Santa Barbara suburb. Today this is where high-tech companies flourish, university students call home, & parents raise their kids. This town has a beautiful stretch of coast & beachside parks. The main attraction in this coastal area is the University of California, a Nobel laureate-rich campus that spreads across 989 acres along the California coastline. The University sits on the foundation of Santa Barbara's old coastal fort & boasts one of the most spectacular strips of beach in Santa Barbara. Be sure to tour some of the museums & galleries scattered throughout the campus.

Stop at the visitor center to pick up a campus map & brochures for one of the state's most beautiful universities, or join a guided tour. www. ucsb.edu. (805) 893-2487

Goleta is about 8 miles west of the city of Santa Barbara , along the coast. Nearby is the Santa Barbara campus of the University of California (UCSB) and the student community of Isla Vista .

The Goleta area used to be the home of the native Chumash Indians for thousands of years. They were known by the first European settlers as Canaliños (for the canoes they built to travel to the Channel Islands ).

One of the largest villages was in northern Goleta , not far from the present-day Santa Barbara Airport .

During the 19th century most of the area, formerly covered with oak trees, was deforested; ranching was the principal land use during this time.

In 2002 Goleta was incorporated as a city after several unsuccessful attempts. A significant urbanized area between the town of Goleta and the city of Santa Barbara remains unincorporated, largely consisting of the area which polled against incorporation prior to the 2002 election (it was excluded from the proposed incorporated boundaries, in order to make passage of incorporation more likely).

The current boundaries of Goleta are shown in the city's map

Goleta today is a mix of suburbs, shopping centers and nice homes within a few miles of each other. Much of Goleta is considered to be a quiet community while Santa Barbara tends to attract most of the tourists.
